HAMPTON, Va. – A return home has made a big difference for the Hampton University women’s basketball team as they have now recorded their second consecutive victory by defeating Georgia State on Sunday night. The Lady Pirates, used a 6-0 run in the final minute of play and cruised to a 62-55 win over the Lady Panthers at the HU Convocation Center.
Hampton (2-1) shot 30 percent from the field in the second half bouncing back from a season low 22 percent seen in the first half. The Lady Panthers (0-3) shot 42 percent (24-57) on the night.
Junior Rachel Butler (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln HS) led the Pirates with 14 points, seven steals and five rebounds, while sophomore forward Ashlee Finely (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) recorded 11 points and pulled eight rebounds. Junior guard Artavia Burns (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln HS) added 10 points and six steals, while Chinyere Ukoh (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge HS) grabbed a team-high 10 boards. Freshman guard Whitney Hill (Hampton, Va./Phoebus HS) was also productive in her second career start with nine points and a team-high two blocks.
The first half was a seesaw with both teams trading leads throughout the entire half with neither team leading by more than three points. However a back door pass by guard Roneisha Corbitt (Philadelphia, Pa./Paul Robeson) to Burns for a lay-up at the buzzer gave the Lady Pirates a 28-24 advantage at the break.
In the second half HU held an 11 point lead with six minutes remaining until a lay-up by Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen triggered a 10-2 run by the Lady Panthers. With the visitors up by one with 2:31 on the clock Finley scored five straight points to seal the victory for the blue and white.
As for the Lady Panthers, they were led by two players in double-digits—Jensen (19 pts./ 7 assts.) and Danyiell McKeller (16 pts./11 rebs.).
HU will now take some much-needed time off before returning home to take on Sunbelt rival Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday, November 22 at the HU Convocation Center for a 6 p.m. match-up.
